COIMBATORE: Over 300 local Indians including media personnel from various national dailies thronged in large numbers to see a rare photo exhibition on Tibet and its people at Hotel Anamalia, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, from 3-4 January 2014.

The two-day photo exhibition was jointly organised by the Tibet Museum, Department of Information and International Relations, Central Tibetan Administration and Friends of Tibet, Coimbatore, with the sole aim of raising  awareness about Tibet’s history, culture and the situation inside Tibet.

Chief Guest of the programme, 87-year-old Dr. S.N Nagarajan of Global Peace Center and a former member of Communist Party of India (CPI); and guest of honor Shri R. Gopalan of Peace Park Trust and a Gandhian, inaugurated the exhibition on 3 January 2014.

Besides attracting local residents of the city, the exhibition also saw small community of Tibetan sweater sellers in Coimbatore coming together to see the rare photo exhibition.

The enthusiasm, interest and sympathy for Tibetan issue were palpable from the comment written by the visitors in the comment book.

Several national dailies like – The Hindu, The Times of India, The Indian Express, The Economist, Deccan Chronicle, Asian News International and Mathrubhumi covered the Tibet Museum exhibition by devoting significant portion of its space, as did local TV Channels and vernacular papers by covering detailed information about the exhibition.

Along with the photo exhibit, documentary movies on Tibet’s history, current situation in Tibet and the self-immolations in Tibet were also screened. Official publications of Central Tibetan Administration were also distributed for free.

The Tibet Museum had commenced its south India leg of tour from Auroville near Pondicherry by showcasing the exhibition at Pavilion of Tibetan culture, Auroville from 26-29 December 2013 and is now hosting exhibition at St. Albert College, Ernakulam Town (Kochi), Kerala from 6-7 January 2014.
