Tibet Museum’s Workshop on “Digitization and Archiving Rich Cultural Heritage”

DHARAMSHALA: Mr. Aditya Arya, a trustee chairman of India Photo Archive Foundation, gave a workshop on “Digitization and Archiving, Rich Cultural Heritage” at Kashag Secretariat Hall from 6-7 February 2013. The workshop was organized by the Tibet Museum, Department of Information and International Relations, Central Tibetan Administration and funded by the Norwegian Church Aid.

The workshop was primarily held to enhance the skills of the present working staff in the archival work and also to build a network co-operation among Tibetan Archivists in and around Dharamsala.

Around 18 archivists dealing with archival work in photographs and audio-visuals attended the workshop. Participants included archivist from Department of Information and International Relations, Department of Religion and Culture, Gadhen Phodrang Office, Namgyal Monastery, Library of Tibetan Work and Archives, Tibetan Medical and Astro-Institute, Norbu-lingka Institute and Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts.

The two-day workshop concluded with an agenda for future planning where all the participants unanimously agreed to meet every three-month for brain storming, and to build a network of archivists by starting a Facebook page and group mailing list.

Mr. Tashi Phuntsok, Secretary of Department of Information and International Relations gave the concluding remark where he urged the participants to apply what you have learnt during the workshop to make some difference in your archival work. He also talked about the significance of historic photographs and their need for preservation and digitization.
