Tibet Museum’s Two-day Comprehensive Meeting of Content Developers Underway

DHARAMSHALA: The Tibet Museum, Department of Information and International Relations, Central Tibetan Administration today began a two-day meeting of curators and content developers for its new Tibet Museum and Education Center, which is to be inaugurated soon at Gangchen Kyishong.

The meeting is inaugurated by International Secretary Sonam Norbu Dagpo and Information Secretary (equivalent) Tenzin Dhardon Sharling. Experts, scholars, and researchers on Tibetan history, environment, culture and political situation are attending the meeting.

In his welcome remarks, Secretary Sonam Norbu Dagpo spoke about the evolution of the museum over the years since its establishment. He said the Tibet Museum serves an indispensable purpose of presenting Tibet’s history, with an emphasis on the period of Chinese occupation, to a wide range of audience.

He also described the Tibet Museum as predominantly pictorial, and explained the effectiveness of the visual medium as more powerful than the written word. He attributed the success of the museum to the blessings of His Holiness the Dalai lama and the hard work of the staff.

Secretary Tenzin Dhardon Sharling spoke about the immense prospect of the museum as not just as an institution of cultural memory but also as a center of intellectual and educational enrichment.

She spoke about plans to collaborate with educational institutions around the world to develop the museum based on a rigorous intellectual engagement and said the development of the Tibet museum is a long-term investment to preserve Tibetan cultural heritage and history.

She further outlined plans to establish a virtual museum to replicate the success of the physical museum. She explained that a museum’s primary objective is to spur the public to explore, experience and engage in a particular subject and prompt them into action to never repeat the mistakes of the past.

Director Tashi Phuntsok of Tibet Museum gave the progress report and project update on the development of the new Tibet Museum.

The two-day meeting will discuss agendas such as collective vision of the new Tibet Museum, vision of each theme, review of existing literature, overall museum outlook, etc.

The content developers will submit a preliminary draft and design of the assigned themes on 3 October for further review.
